The connection between the U.S. Forest Service and the Trans-Ozark Trail is important because much of the developed portion of the current in-use Ozark Trail sections go through the Mark Twain National Forest in southern and southeastern Missouri. The Ozark Highlands Trail in Arkansas runs through the Boston Mountains and the Ozark National Forest administered by USFS headquarters in Russellville, AR. The Buffalo National River and Park are administered by the National Park Service main office located in Harrison, AR.
