Dan is really Daniel W. McKeel, Jr., M.D., a physician whose day job is an Associate Professor of Pathology and Director of the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center Neuropathology Laboratory at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Other interests include photography, scientific computing and programming, website development, and videography. His "favorite things" include Louise (of course!), Lucy the cat, the "kids" (all grown and living in Virginia; we got married in 1961 being kids ourselves) where Dan was born in Richmond, graduated from Hampden-Sydney College and got an M.D. degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Fond memories of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah Valley evoked by hiking Missouri's Ozark Trail had a lot to do with this website for other back-to-nature souls.
Dan's other website has a tutorial on the neuropathology of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders (http://www.biostat.wustl.edu/adrc/adrc2.html) - please visit!
Louise is a San Francisco native who grew up in Fresno and graduated from Sweet Briar College in Virginia where she met Dan. Louise has been a teacher, has a masters degree in Social Work from George Warren Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis (M.S.W. '85). In 1990, she walked from Indiana to New York City with 85 other people on the Global Walk for Peace and the Environment. In connection with this adventure, she published GLOBAL WALK TALK, an environmental newsletter. Other careers have included stints as interior designer while Dan served in the Army Medical Corps from 1971-4 in San Antonio at the Surgical Research Institute and employment at Gateway Trailnet, Inc., a non-profit organization that leads new trail development in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
Louise's recent ventures include starting a new environmental newspaper called GLOBAL HOME JOURNAL as the first effort for her new company, The Village Image. She produces biweekly public access TV shows for Greentime, affiliated with the Gateway Green Allliance in St. Louis. Recent shows have dealt with landfill pollution of underground acquifers, NASA's Cassini mission to Saturn carrying 72 pounds of plutonium on board, organic farming, wage equity for women, Earthday 1997,
city golf course, and Missouri lobby day.
Louise and Dan have together developed and maintained several additional websites for Earthday 1996 and Earthday 1997 as well as Nationals Trail Day 1996 and NTD1997. Please stop by these sites, all of which have lots of event photos including winter horseback riding on the Berryman Trail.
