Overview: The official Trace Creek section extends 24 miles from Hazel Creek campground at the southern terminus of the Courtois Creek section (04) just off hwy. Z to the southern terminus at Ottery Creek on hwy. A near the intersection with hwy. 49 four miles north of the town of Black. The southern terminus links with the Taum Sauk section (06) of the OZT. On the way south, the trail crosses hwy. C and DD but these crossings are difficult to detect from the highways. This section is in the Potosi Forest Ranger District (USDA) of the Mark Twain National Forest. An older section was built in 1968 and a five mile addition was constructed in 1983.

Highways include Z, C, DD and 32. The Keith Springs Picnic Area is on hwy. 32 near the south end of the trail.
