OZARK TRAIL IN MISSOURI


Overview: The Karkaghne section is 24.7 miles long and lies within the Potosi/Fredericktown and Salem Ranger Districts. It connects the Trace Creek section to its north and the Blair Creek section of the western limb of OZT in the Salem Ranger district to its south. The current north access point is at Sutton Bluff campground and Recreation Area, and the south trailhead is on Hwy 72 after crossing hwy. TT at the intersection with hwy. P. The planned Ottery Creek north trailhead is on hwy. A when the full section will be 31 miles long. This is a foot trail only.

NOTE: The north end of this section is scheduled to undergo major revisions. The trail will actually be relocated. Stay tuned... (webmaster)

Directions
Sutton Bluff Recreation Area access point is reached by going 3-4 miles on hwy. 21 northwest of Centerville; 7 mi SW on Forest Road 2221, 3 mi S on Forest Road No. 2236. The south trailhead on hwy. 72 lies at its intersection with hwy. P from the south near Bunker, MO.

A map of Sutton Bluff campground, West Fork of Black River, is shown on p. 67 of Ramon Gass' "Missouri Hiking Trails" where he describes the offshoot 1 mile Sutton Bluff Recreation Area Trail but interestingly does not mention the OZT. This area is managed by the Salem Ranger District of the U.S. Forest Service who should also be contacted for a District map ($3.00 9/97, phone 573-729-6656).
Facilities
At Sutton Bluff are 35 camping units, drinking water, fishing, hiking, picnicking, sanitary facilities, trailer space.
Features
At Sutton Bluff is the West Fork of the Black River and nearby are 20 miles of ATV trails as well as a 1 mile nature trail that features wildflowers. Access point to the OZT Karkaghne, Trace Creek and Blair Creek sections.
